The first project of 317 core studio was the development of a material organization composed of small units that forms a field with emerging properties. Working with museum board, I designed a unit comprised of two hexagonal shapes attached perpendicular to one another. Connected, two of these units form a larger module. Adjusting the angle of the module produced different effects.
The dimension of the unit and the connection of module-to-module and row-to-row also influenced the behavior of the field. Study models and diagrams were developed to test the potential and limits of the system. The final construct illustrates the flexibility of the unit in creating a dynamic yet rigid system, utilizing subtle changes in unit connections and dimensions to produce a range of visual and spatial effects.
