The term "interzone", a word frequently associated with the Belgian designer Raf Simons, describes the conceptual space shared in art, music, fashion and youth culture; an interdisciplinary collaborative method of practice; and a spatial condition, an area between two distinct areas, primarily defined by its adjacencies.
The project site is located in the emerging Cortex district, between the Central West End and Grand Center. The program, a “live-work, performance-exhibition, think-tank”, includes shared workshops and studios, flexible exhibition and performance spaces, a library with screening rooms, private studios and residential units. Inspired by the work of German art historian and theorist Jan Verwoert, the architecture creates multiple spaces of communal exchange that foster the idea of “shared radical difference” through spatial and material means. Unlike traditional institutions, which tend to segregate hierarchically and taxonomically, the project aims to occupy the interzone, a new chaotic space of amusement and bemusement.
